This seminar is aimed at academics and support staff who are interested in enhancing their use of Technology Enhanced Learning, (TEL), in their curriculum design and understanding the barriers to the use of TEL in learning and teaching at University.

The TEL Team in the Glamorgan Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) has been undertaking a Building Capacity Project, funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) investigating Curriculum Design through Technology Enhanced Learning. This seminar will showcase the outcomes of the project.

The JISC funded RATATAT (Remote Access to Academic Trials and Testing) project at Swansea Metropolitan University addressed a difficult problem for institutions offering courses by online distance learning: that of satisfying the practical work component of the course. Campus attendance for practical work is the normal solution but this is very inconvenient, particularly for overseas students. The project recognised that the practical work in all computing, most engineering and many subjects in other curriculum areas was computer-based and that, if remote access could be gained to those computers, then students may be able to carry out their practical work online.

The RATATAT project tested this concept with an MSc Course in Non-Destructive Testing. This TEL seminar will describe how an online learning environment was developed, using Web 2.0 applications, that gave online access to 4 different laboratory experiments, provided multi-view videoconference access to the laboratory and technical staff, and gave access to all the necessary guidance material. The outcomes of the project showed that the system allowed the real-time completion of complex experimentation by online students who gained the same practical skills as the campus-based students.
